description: The Oklahoma Wellhead Protection program is part of a federal program geared to improving drinking water quality by protecting the sources of drinking water. The goal of Oklahoma’s Wellhead Protection program is to minimize the risk of pollution by limiting activities on the land around public water supply wells that might cause pollution. This layer has been generated by drawing 300 ft buffers around the 2014 Public Water Supply Well GIS layer. DEQ rules state that public drinking water wells are not to be located within 300 feet horizontally from any existing or potential source of pollution (OAC 252:626-7-4 3C). This layer is an example of a calculated fixed radius. You should additionally look at the “Wellhead Protection Areas (WHPAs)” GIS layer, that layer was generated by a Numerical Flow/Flow-and-Transport Computer Model. The buffers generated by the computer model show the potential movement of water and/or contaminates around a potential public water source. The “Wellhead Protection Area (WHPAs)” layer should be used if a modeled WHPA has been generated for the public water supply well of interest.
